“Mind over Matter”

“It’s mind over matter.”

That’s how I recently described running, long distance running, and particularly marathon running. I said this on live TV and truly do believe it.

Really, this pertains to most, if not all, physical challenges or goals. I’ve written much about this, focus highly on the mental aspect as I know that as humans this is where we struggle most.

Our mental state or ability to control our mind is really the biggest aspect to achieving amazing things in life. Your body will tell itself it’s done much sooner than it reaches anywhere close to done. The mind protects ourselves from pain, that’s how the body works.

One of the greatest aspects of running, or endurance activities, is being able to confront the little person inside who wants to quit. When you are struggling the most to continue on, learning how to talk ourselves through that physical pain threshold is exactly where greatness starts to happen.

Everyone hits those spots, EVERYONE. The “I can’t run another minute” spot. Doesn’t matter how seasoned you are, you will hit that wall. That spot where your body has given up and your mind is now the only thing in charge. That is really where you truly learn what you’re capable of. This lesson of capability, when pushed a couple times, begins to engulf your life. You begin to realize your capabilities aren’t what you’ve always told yourself they were, it begins to spread around other aspects of life, and you begin to truly see opportunity in what always appeared like a wall or closed door.

That person inside you, defeating that person inside is one of the most rewarding aspects to physical activity. Trust me, it’s not the outside physical aspect you should be excited about when exercising and becoming fit. It’s the inside lessons you’re learning and how to really capture the best within yourself.

That stuff is incredible and nobody can take that away from you, nor can they see it. It’s simply you battling it out with yourself, winning the mental game, and truly putting “mind over matter”.

Success - It’s not about how you look

It’s about how you feel.  I’ve written this blog a few times before this one and kept deleting it. Rambled into clothing, equipment, and a variation of those including digging into DadBods. I’ll save you from those as here is what I was hoping to say without ranting. Forget everyone else. Short version....that’s it. If you really want to get better, stronger, healthier, grow both mentally and physically, and maximize your time to really drive balance in your entire life....you need to forget about everyone else. If you’re going to train, forget everyone else. You’re out there to sweat, so get it out. I’m a big sweater, always have been. 5 minutes or less into yoga and I’m drenched. But I can’t let that hold me back and never have. If I did I wouldn’t do it. If you’re going to run, forget everyone else. There will always be those faster, shorter, taller, fatter, skinnier, and those in all those shapes who make it look easier than you. It doesn’t matter, you re...

Success - Finding my ‘Why’

Success - Finding My ‘Why’  I talked a lot about failure last week, I will likely touch on it more as I go since it is so relevant to success. Let’s talk success for a moment, because I’ve also managed to have lots of that amongst all that failure. The basis for my blog stems largely from what I accomplished in May, the reactions that ensued afterwards and conversations had prior all made me realize I needed to explain myself. I ran a full marathon, 42.2kms, without dying...although there was little chance that would have happened (the dying that is). I sporadically have crazy ideas and this was one of them, so I decide to sign up in March largely to raise funds for charity but also to accomplish this feat that I put on a “List of things to do before I die” when I was around 19 years old. I made this list half of my life ago and still remember many of the crazy things on it while I continue to check them off. See, I had much more time, possibly more drive, energy, and l...

Mental Health - Everyone has a Story

The happiness of your life depends upon the quality of your thoughts. - Marcus Aurelius Everyone has a story to tell, whether good or bad or challenging or epic, everyone has a story to tell that’s worth listening to. Let’s stop for a blog post.  Let’s stop to talk about something near and dear to my heart. One of the many reasons I write this blog, likely the most important reason and the ‘why’ around sharing these lessons on living a life of harmony. Health, particularly men’s health but not limited to men only. It’s for the career-oriented, adult-responsibility, busy-living individuals out there and a greater issue among this group, a lack of fitness and health well-being balanced off with driving careers and raising families.  It’s not only about physical health though. It’s about mental health as well, in my opinion this is the most important piece.  November is coming this week, which also means Movember. The re-named month of the moustache. But...
